He certainly could not bring to the team what Payet does.

He'd be better there than in the holding role but he wouldn't be half as good

Not for me. He's not quick or tricky enough. Song is best in a holding position picking his passes and dictating the flow and tempo. Defensively he will then break up play and tackle.
Song could go forward when he gets an opportunity but for me they are so different.

On form he can play anywhere he wants.
Personally I'd prefer two strikers if Payet is out. It worked perfectly well last season.

Agreed.
Sakho, Zarate up front,
Lanzani at the tip, Noble holding and Song and Kouyate either side.
So how are Sakho and Song doing?

id prefer song in the roaming role between obiang and lanzini/payet. too many times last season he dwelt on the ball too long and put the centre backs under pressure, not sure he offers enough though to play at 10

true stirling but the armband conundrum seems to rule out noble ever getting dropped or rested so that problem may arise again

Maybe we could persuade BILLY BONDS to come out of retirement for a game or two (say at Goodison Park).

No
A number of Payet's goals have come from following up shots. Song even at his best does not have that pace to be in that right place at the right time.

Depends which Alex Song turns up. If it's the one from this time last year then he should definitely be in the side but not in Payet's position.

He could but he wouldn't be any good there, Lanzini or Zarate
